Your Amex Hotel Credit & 3rd Night Free: 80+ Hotels to Book Right Now

Share

The most common complaint I hear from Amex Platinum cardholders: “I can never find anything good to use my Amex hotel credit on.”

I get it. The $300 semi-annual hotel credit sounds incredible on paper, but it only works on Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection bookings through Amex Travel. That narrows the field. The catch is that FHR and THC properties tend to run expensive. When a hotel is $600+ a night, your $300 credit barely moves the needle. Finding a property where the credit actually covers a meaningful chunk of the stay is the real challenge.

Right now, there are 86 luxury hotels with active 3rd night free offers that bring the nightly rate under $300, even before the credit. Some of them well under.

What You’re Actually Stacking Here

If you have the Amex Platinum (personal, business, Schwab, or Morgan Stanley variant), you get a $300 hotel credit twice a year. That credit applies to FHR and THC bookings made through Amex Travel.

Many of those properties currently have 3rd night free offers active. The average nightly rates below already account for that free night (total cost divided by three nights). So when you apply your $300 credit on top, your real out-of-pocket drops fast.

One more thing most people miss: bookings through Amex Travel earn 5x Membership Rewards points. On a $382 booking like the Conrad Bangkok, that’s roughly 1,900 points on top of everything else. A nice bonus when you’re already paying so much less for the stay.

The hotel collection property on Amex Travel portal

The Conrad Bangkok makes the math obvious. $382 total (room charges plus taxes and fees). Minus your $300 statement credit: under $100 out of pocket. Plus roughly 1,900 Amex points earned on the full booking. At a Conrad. In Thailand.

That’s not a budget hotel trick. That’s a genuine luxury property, and the math just happens to work out almost perfectly.

Depending on the hotel and whether it’s an FHR or THC property, your stay may include some or all of the following:

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • A property credit (often $100, sometimes applicable to spa, dining, or activities)
  • Room upgrade upon arrival, when available
  • Noon check-in when available
  • 4pm late checkout guaranteed

Before You Book

A few things to know before you start planning:

  • These offers are only bookable through Amex Travel (amextravel.com), not directly with the hotel
  • Blackout dates may apply. Availability varies by property. Prices vary by date.
  • On-property benefits vary by hotel; confirm details on the Amex Travel listing before booking

The Hotels

Average nightly rates reflect the full 3-night stay with the free night already factored in. Your $300 credit further reduces the total.

Amex Hotel Credit: Use It or Lose It

The $300 credit resets every six months. If you’re sitting on a hotel credit and wondering where to spend it, this is your answer.

Three nights at a luxury hotel, a free night included, breakfast covered, a property credit to burn, and a late checkout so you don’t have to rush. For some of these properties, your out-of-pocket after the credit is less than a single night at a mid-tier hotel.

The credit isn’t the hard part. Finding the right hotel at the right time is. That list above just did that work for you.

Don’t have an Amex Platinum yet? The personal and business versions each come with $600 in hotel credits every year, on top of travel and lifestyle credits, lounge access, hotel status, and a welcome bonus that can cover multiple trips on its own. If you’ve been on the fence, the math tends to make the decision for you. [Referral link]
